4-week group January 17-February 7, 2012

This is the perfect introductory group to mindfulness meditation, what is mindfulness? how to do it? how can this benefit my life?

The group teaches different mindfulness meditation techniques and their applications in day-to-day life, including the current science behind the practice. Mindfulness is currently used and taught in major academic health centers in the country like Harvard, Duke, U. Mass, elementary schools, and businesses like Google to reduce symptoms, enhance academic performance, and enhance the workplace.

MIND-BODY MEDICINE SKILLS GROUP FOR RELAPSE PREVENTION FROM SUBSTANCE USE
9-week group February 28-April 17, 2012

Learn skills to help you better manage anxiety, depression, inattention and pain. Mind body medicine skills are evidenced-based techniques to reduce stress, enhance coping ability, and improve symptoms of depression, pain and anxiety. This group combines mind-body skills (different meditations, visualization, biofeedback, autogenic learning, mindful eating and nutrition, and cognitive restructuring among others) and cognitive relapse prevention skills to strenghten recovery from addictions. It is not twelve steps based group. The group complements and reinforces twelve steps and other recovery work you may be doing. This is the first time the group is offered in New Orleans, providing you with this unique opportunity. Sobriety is required.

This is our basic and succesfull mind-body medicine-based stress reduction group. Come and learn the fundamentals of different meditation techniques, mindful eating and nutrition, visualizations, guided imagery, biofeedback, autogenic learning, and cognitive restructuring techniques among many other. Mind body medicine techniques have shown to reduce depression, anxiety, PTSD, pain. The techniques complement any other form of treatment.

The Mindful Living Program© is a wellness program created to help you design, support, and live a more balanced, healthy, and harmonious life. Mind-body skills complement, inform, and support other forms of medical treatment, psychotherapy, and mind-body practices.

Mind-Body Medicine is the field of scientific medicine that integrates the knowledge and effectiveness of modern biosciences with the wisdom of the world's healing traditions, providing a natural way to reduce stress, manage symptoms of common medical and psychological conditions, and increase performance.

Common conditions for which there is scientific evidence for mind-body approaches include:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Stress
  • Trauma
  • Addiction recovery and relapse prevention
  • Chronic pain conditions including headaches, fibromyalgia and back pain
  • Hypertension
  • Diabetes
  • Gastrointestinal problems
  • Sleep difficulties
  • Poor academic performance
  • Job burn-out and vicarious trauma

Mind-body approaches are non-stigmatizing, cost-effective, easily accessible, and can be taught to clients, patients and professional in diverse settings including clinics, hospitals, schools and businesses.

The Mindful Living Program teaches mind-body medicine skills through individual, group educational sessions, corporate consulting, and community service.

 

Individual Mind-Body Sessions

Individual Mind-Body Sessions are offered by Dr. Calderón through Mindful Psychiatry, usually as a set of 4-6 sessions. Sessions are individually tailored to meet the individual’s needs, whether to help a novice begin a personal mind-body practice or to aid more experienced practitioners of mind-body skills. Mind-Body Medicine Groups

Mind-Body Medicine Groups teach several techniques, including mindfulness meditation, nutrition, biofeedback, autogenic training, genograms, relapse prevention, and cognitive restructuring techniques.

Groups meet for one-and-half to two hours a week, for eight to twelve weeks. A commitment to develop an individual self –care practice and to attend the full program is required. These groups are offered several times a year and are closed to new participants once a new course begins.

Facilitators

José Calderón-Abbo, M.D.

Dr. Calderón specializes in addiction medicine and is certified in mind-body medicine. He has trained with James Gordon, M.D. form the Center for Mind-Body Medicine in Washington, D.C., with Jon Kabat-Zinn and his colleagues on Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction (MBSR), as well as Dr.Herbert Benson at Harvard University’s Benson-Henri Institute for Mind Body Medicine, and Jack Kornfield among others. He has taught mind-body stress reduction to patients, first responders, military personnel, health professionals, medical students, clergy, teachers and businesses. He co-founded the Mind-Body Center of Louisiana (non-profit) and has been a consultant to the Harvard Program for Refugees and Trauma, and the Mexican Ministry of Public Safety. Dr. Calderón lectures both nationally and internationally on trauma, stress, and applied mind-body medicine. He is currently researching mind-body based relapse prevention for addictions. Calderón is national faculty for the Center for Mind-Body Medicine in Washington D.C., as well as LSU and Tulane University department's of psychiatry.
