On August 28th, the New Orleans Healing Center had its grand and awaited opening. New Orleans Healing Center is unique among community centers, in that it was specially created to help, heal, and empower surrounding neighborhoods on a civic, social, economic, environmental, intellectual, and spiritual level.
At its core, it consists of a cooperative grocery, street university, yoga studio, green business incubator, healing arts collective, performance hall, interfaith center, and organic food restaurant. But more importantly, these and other carefully selected community-focused programs, services, and activities are designed to help revitalize and restore neighborhoods and bring them together. Dr. Calderon spoke of the role of spirituality in health during the opening of the center.
In November, Dr. Calderon presented on Integrative Medicine to the Executive Committee of the Patient-Centered Research Institute (PCORI). The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) is the newly created Federal Institute assigned to conduct research to provide information about the best available evidence to help patients and their health care providers make more informed decisions. In December, Dr. Calderon is meeting with a academicians, educators, community leaders and business owners in Mexico as part of the efforts to reduce the psychological and medical impact that organized-crime related violence is having in that country. In collaboration with scholars form the Universidad Americana, the first population survey to study the effects of violence in Mexico was launched. The information will help develop strategies in healthcare to reduce the effects of traumatic exposure, with a particular emphasis in the use of mind-body medicine approaches. Mind-body medicine has been shown to be a very effective public health intervention to reduce the effects of violence and trauma in many parts of the world including Israel, Gaza, Kosovo, New Orleans, and Haiti.
